New Arrival!~~ Guatemala Finca San Jose Ocana

Friday, September 18th, 2009

Guatemala Finca Sane Jose Ocana ~~ $10.99/pound

Medium Roast. This farm won the #2 spot in the 2007 Guatemala Cup of Excellence (kind of a big deal), they didn’t have any extra to enter into the ‘08 and ‘09 competition. Complex, bright, semi-sweet Guatemalan. Strong aroma and presence. Very similar to the Guatemala El Injerto we stocked earlier this year.

I’m very excited to carry this coffee for a number of reasons. Number one, the quality that has been among the highest for 5 generations starting back in 1623! There is a lot of history with this particular coffee farm. The land it’s grown on is from an original land grant back 1623. The same family has passed on their knowledge and demand for high quality for over 5 generations.

Another reason to be excited is because this coffee is more “fair” than “fair trade.” Even with fair trade coffees, there’s a middle man, exporter, and co-ops. There’s usually several stops the coffee still has to make before making it out of the docks and thus, several stops the money has to make before getting back to the farmer. Don’t get me wrong, fair trade is great practice and idea but i think we can do better. And we do! The importer i use most frequently has what he calls, “direct trade Farm Gate pricing transparency program.” He negotiates a price (at least 50% above fair trade minimums, usually over 100%) directly at the farm gate with the farmers, guaranteeing the farmers get ALL the money for the coffee.

All that to say, when this stock runs out, that might be it for a year or more!

This coffee works well at various roast levels but the complexity and dynamics really come out at lighter roasts. So this might be a little “lighter” in color than your used to. Hope you enjoy!
